An Example

Nothing, Then Everything

You're Dana, out for a four-hour hike that runs long. Your contacts hear nothing for four hours, and that's on purpose. Miss your check-in, though, and things escalate quickly.

    You start the trip

Four hours, and a note saying where you are going and what you are driving. Your contacts are told nothing. Nobody gets a “Dana has started a trip” message, now or ever.

    A reminder, not a guarantee

Your deadline comes due whether or not this arrives. We cannot reach a phone that is off, out of battery, or out of signal — and that is the whole reason the alert does not depend on anything running on your phone. If the reminder never reaches you, the deadline still passes on our servers, and your contacts will still be notified.

    What to do next

    1. Try Dana directly. Call, text, or message them.
    2. If they mentioned being with others, try those people too.
    3. If something feels off, trust it — check their usual places.
    4. If you think they’re in danger, call local authorities. You don’t need to be sure.

Most missed check-ins are just that. Rangerly is here for the times they aren’t.

    Why the emails say “UTC”

An email is written by a server that has no idea what timezone it will be opened in, so it prints the absolute time and labels it. The alert page does not have that problem — it runs in a browser, and every time on it is drawn in whatever clock the reader is holding.

  5. 12:54 PM

    Someone opens the link

Two hours and a bit after the deadline. The alert page tells them how late you are, hands them your details, and tells them what to do if they can't figure out why you missed your deadline.

  6. 1:05 PM

    You check in

Everyone who was alerted is told that you are safe within five minutes. The alert page they've been watching turns green and puts your personal details away.

Why you’re receiving this. You’re listed as an emergency contact for Dana Keller on Rangerly. They tell us where they’re going and when they expect to be back; if they don’t check in on time, we tell you.

  • Their time, not yours, not ours.

Every time on the page shows in the reader's own timezone, so a contact in California isn't doing math on New Hampshire time. The page also keeps itself current while it's open. It won't go stale.

  • Share as much or as little as you like.

Date of birth, vehicle, medications, allergies: you're asked during setup, and it all lives on your profile, where you can change it anytime. Fill in everything, or nothing. The page only shows what you've chosen to share.

  • We don't know where you are.

Rangerly never tracks your location, so this page can't show it. Your contacts get the note you wrote before you left. Make it a good one.

  • The link works for thirty days, and then disappears.

It is a signed, single-purpose address — not a login, and not a page anyone can find by guessing. After thirty days the signature expires and the link is simply dead. After you complete your check-in, we remove your sensitive personal data from the page but leave a messaging letting your contacts know you are safe.

The Safe Page

What The Page Becomes

Your contact is watching your alert page, but it changes the moment that you checkin. This is the same screen as above, eleven minutes later, after you check-in.

What should you do?

Nothing urgent. It’d still be worth checking in with Dana — they probably have a good story to tell.

Why you’re getting this. You’re listed as an emergency contact for Dana Keller on Rangerly. They tell us where they’re going and when they expect to be back; if they don’t check in by then, we tell you. If their check-in had stayed missing, this page would have shown you their trip and the personal details they chose to share.

The details are put away, not just hidden

Once you're safe, your personal details leave the page entirely. What's left says one thing clearly: you're okay. The link keeps working like this for 30 days, then it will disappear.

Limitations

The Honest List

What the alert is, and what it is not. A missed check-in starts a conversation between people who care about you — it does not dispatch anybody, and it cannot say where you are.

  • A trip with no confirmed contact alerts nobody.

Inviting somebody is not the same as them accepting. Until an emergency contact has confirmed, they are not alerted — and a trip with none of them confirmed runs, expires, and tells no one. The app says so out loud when you start one, both on screen and in the reply to a GO text, because it is the one failure this product must not have quietly.

  • We don't call for help. Your people do.

Rangerly only alerts the contacts you picked. It never calls emergency services for you. Whether to make that call is up to the people who know you best.

  • No location data, ever.

Rangerly does not track your location and cannnot share it with your emergency contacts. Your contacts only get the note that you left for them, so make it a good one. It's a deliberate trade: on the hundreds of trips that go fine, nobody knows where you were, including us.

  • Delivery isn't guaranteed.

No service can promise a text or email arrives on time, and we're no exception. Carriers filter texts, and spam folders catch emails. That's why we confirm we can reach each contact when they accept your invite, and send on every channel they've set up. It cuts the risk. It doesn't remove it.

FAQs

Alert Questions

Within about five minutes. The job that sends alerts runs every five minutes, so the real gap is whatever is left of the current interval—usually two or three minutes. It runs on our servers against our clock, so it does not matter whether your phone is on, charged, or in signal when the deadline passes.

There is no grace period beyond that. If you need longer, extend the trip before the deadline rather than after it.

No. There is nothing to install, nothing to sign up for and no password to lose. They confirm an invitation once, and after that the only thing they ever have to do is open a link—which works in any browser, on any device, with no sign-in.

No, because we do not know. Rangerly never reads your location—there is no tracking, no GPS trail and no last-known point anywhere in the product. What your contacts receive is the note you typed before you set out, word for word.

That is why the note is worth a sentence rather than a trail name. “Franconia Ridge loop from Lafayette Place, blue Subaru at the trailhead” is something a search can start from. “Hiking” is not.

Check in anyway, and immediately. Everyone who was alerted gets an all-clear by the same channels they were reached on, within five minutes, and the page they are holding turns green and puts your personal details away.

The reply you get back will tell you that your contacts were alerted and ask you to reach out to them yourself, which is worth doing: an automated all-clear closes the loop, and a phone call closes it properly.

Yes. The same event sends you a text and an email of your own, at the same moment, saying that your check-in was missed and your contacts have now been notified. It exists for the walk back into signal: you find out what is already happening without you, rather than from a worried voicemail.

Exactly what you put on your profile, and only while a check-in is actually missing. The profile is one form you fill in once—description, vehicle, medical notes, numbers—and it appears on the alert page for every trip. Leave it blank and the page simply does not show that section.

Once you check in, the page stops showing any of it. A contact holding the link sees your name, your note, your times and an all-clear.

No. Rangerly tells the people you chose, and tells them when to make that call themselves—the alert email and the alert page both end on “if you think they are in danger, call local authorities; you do not need to be sure”.

That is deliberate. An automated call to a rescue service on a timer would be wrong far more often than it was right, and the people best placed to know whether this one is real are the ones who know you.

Yes. Every alert email has an unsubscribe link, and they can reply STOP to any text. Both are required by law. You'll see it the next time you set up a trip, but if someone opts out while you're already out there, you won't know.

So it's worth a conversation, not just a setting. Tell the people on your list what they've signed up for, and check in with them about it once in a while.

The best trips are the ones nobody hears about.
